A HERO'S POEM
She opens up her
color book
Her favorite
color green
And finishes
coloring the giraffe
The one she named
Jean
She bites her
lip
And closes her
eyes
As the voice
within would say
Remember all
the colors
Of this special
day
She unlocks her
diary
And thinks of
what to say
And makes a quick
entry
I kissed a boy
today
She bites her
lip
And closes her
eyes
And the voice
within would say
Remember all
the colors
Of this special
day
She climbs up
on the rocker
Takes her grandpa's
knee
And hears of
the sands of Iwo
Because freedom
is never free
She bites her
lip
And closes her
eyes
As the voice
within would say
Remember all
the colors
Of this special
day
She watches that
September morn
News of her best
friend's flight
And knowing how
the world changed
As the towers
burned that night
She bites her
lip
And closes her
eyes
As the voice
within would say
Remember all
the colors
Of this special
day
Now she reads
the manual
Then packs her
field kit tight
And loads her
M-16
Before taking
the desert night
She bites her
lip
And closes her
eyes
As the voice
within would say
Remember all
the colors
Of this special
day
